Here is my week in review:
This week I taught full time every day, started a couple of my larger units, and got established in the classroom! I am really enjoying my time and have been getting really positive feedback from my coaching teacher so far. I have begun to build really great relationships with my students and feel like I have built a lot of trust between us. Student engagement has been high and I am enjoying finding ways to incorporate their interests.
On Thursday I had my first 2 formally observed lessons (one in Physical Education and one in Careers Education). The feedback from both was very positive. My coaching teacher has also been providing feedback for all of my other lessons, so I am getting a lot of feedback and things/techniques to try out!
Math – I taught math every day, began my large unit on multiplication. Started with grouping, counting, and moved up to arrays and repeated addition. I focused on a lot of hands on learning and number talks. In each of my lessons I facilitate a student led discussion, where students felt safe to contribute and share ideas. The number talks have been going well and I have the hand signals you sent me printed and on the board!
English Language Arts – I started my novel study unit and we are already on chapter 4!
Science – Started my inquiry based unit plan on the moon! Students are currently working on a
moon journal: every night they have to draw what the moon looks like and we will discover the phase pattern together! We also co-developed a wonder wall as a class, with every student asking one question or “wonder” they want answered about the moon.
I have started to collaborate with the librarian and she has already sent me lots of amazing resources and ideas to collaborate! I am building a lot of connections in the school (I joined the SOGI
student led club as well and we painted rainbows in the snow one lunch).
I also sent a blurb home to the parents, to start building connections and practice parent communication skills.
I attended 2 Pro D sessions on Friday. One was about physical literacy and one was about SOGI. Both were very interesting. I also worked with my coaching teacher and learned about some areas I was curious about as a new teacher!
Looking forward to week 2!
